Today Microsoft published an update to the Zune media software used for syncing content with Windows Phone 7 devices. The update can be obtained by opening your Zune player, going to the settings, open the software tab, go to General and click on Check for updates. According to Matthijs Hoekstra the update changes 3 files in the Zune program folder. ZuneWmdu.dll, ZunewmduResource.dll and zunewmduresource.dll.mui. After digging around in the largest of the three files ZuneWmdu.dll it’s quite clear what this little piece of software does: it updates device firmware. Making me suspect WMDU to stand for Windows Mobile Device Updater, or something like that. Also the fact that this update even exists at this time is a sign that the first Windows Phone 7 update will be delivered via the Zune software, and not OTA (over the air). Also suggesting the update will be quite large in size. Time will tell but with the recent release of the updated Developer tools, a flood of updated Marketplace apps and this Zune update, we might be getting really close to getting the January update this month!
